Lives and works

Yawuru Country-Broome

My name is Sherena Bin Hitam, Jaogarie to my family. I am from the Bardi Jawi people from the Dampier Peninsular north of Broome. My heritage is the strongest when I have close connections to Country and culture. Everything I see or do, I record it in my ‘art’ memory; to draw, replicate and interpret it through art and at the same time, tell my story. It is always bringing happy, sad and memorable feelings to the surface. Whereever I go, I see the rich Country, color, character, history and a feeling of the old people in their special places. As a mature Aboriginal woman living in both ‘worlds’, I have so much lived-experience, but I’m always trying to understand more about myself, the stories told, family, history, seasons, hunting and gathering. I still have more to learn about how we can keep this balance.
