 Artisan: Saeed Naqvi

‘I address ‘identity’ in contemporary South Africa where we have too easily accepted the labels that apartheid and post-apartheid have given us. I stake my claim to my lineage and through my work and reclaim our heritage as individual people with a history of our own.’ Rooted in her Cape-Malay cultural heritage, Petersen’s tapestries and video unpack colonialist imperialism; and interrogate complex global strategies used in creating and perpetuating cultural divides among people of colour. Represented by SMAC gallery, Cape Town.
