Skater girl, bilby and the winged lion

Helen Kocis Edwards

This work was created and first printed at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice during an artist residency in 2019. Skater girl, bilby and the winged lion explores the connection between two places on either side of the planet. While parts of Australia were experiencing drought and bushfires, Venice was submerged beneath one of the worst acqua alta events in history. Water creates global, social, political and environmental concerns affecting humans, animals and plants alike. In her work Kocis Edwards investigates the relationships between humans and animals within natural and built environments through whimsical, abstract narratives. By including imagery reminiscent of children's book and fairytale illustration, the work uses memory and nostagia to reconsider the intersection of fairytales and reality, and between innocence and experience as they play out in contemporary social and environmental issues. Skater girl, bilby and the winged lion is one of 51 works selected as finalists in the 2021 Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award.
