văn se vănvās  (exile from the forest)

The concept for this artwork began by wondering whether in the future animals will exist only in the forms of logos and brand identities? Human fascination and obsession with animals stretch back from prehistoric rock carvings to the current plethora of emblems for famous clothing, sports, collegiate and other brands. The kaavads are a dialogue with folk art that question the consequences of the commodification and extinction of animals.

Thank you to the following artists that collaborated with me on the creation of this work: Anoop Sharma (miniature art, pichavai art, calendar art), Akhlaq Ahmad (sign painter), Bhajju Shyam (Pardhan Gond artist), Kiritbhai Jayantibhai Chitara (Mata-ni-Pachedi art), Pradyumna Kumar and Pushpa Kumari (Mithila art), Vijay Joshi (Phad art) and Tasleem (carpenter).

This work is part of the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial exhibition Curiosity and Rituals of the Everyday.
