Holding Yard (2300
) is from a recent series of drypoint monotypes that feature stark white images of iconic rural Australia, floating on backgrounds of sweeping gestures of black ink. The yard is designed on its capacity to process livestock and is suspended in timeless space, suggesting both the past and an uncertain future. Threatening containment, these structures asks us to imagine how we would move and detain livestock in the future, and what this stock would look like? This works continues to explore Garstang’s personal lived experience, generational and collective events and iconography, as well as a dialogue surrounding representations of the Australian landscape. Holding Yard (2300)
is one of 51 works selected as finalists in the 2021 Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award.
