Demon and Martyr

Andrew Nicholls

This diptych references historical Catholic kitsch – in particular recalling the many garish 3D effect lenticular images of Christ and the saints that were prevalent in Catholic households during the 1980s. Nicholl’s says of this work: "Though undeniably kitsch, I have always had a fondness for this genre, which utilised the visual trickery of the lenticular medium to evoke a sense of divine mystery and awe for the lower classes, and therefore can be seen to be continuing the legacy of the Catholic baroque through the medium of print." These works pay tribute to this aesthetic through their lurid content and the visual trickery of the characters’ changing expressions when viewed from different angles. Demon and Martyr is one of 51 works selected as finalists in the 2021 Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award. Printed by Clegg Media.
