Death Song

Elmari Steyn
Elmari Steyn’s practice explores ideas of wilderness and narrative, especially the relationships of individuals within nature and the experience of transition and place. In keeping with her interest in narrative based story telling, Death Song is a story-song recounting the last memory-filled days of a dying Man. This work forms part of a series of works about a small band of people, of whom this man was one. The delicate nature of copperplate line etching, aquatint and the layering quality of chine-collé provided the ultimate voice to convey this story. This work is a composite etching of 35 different hand cut copper plates. These were printed, and overprinted, with chine-collé, colouring and 23k gold leaf to suggest the slow flow of time and fragments of memory. Death Song is one of 51 works selected as finalists in the 2021 Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award.
