Around the table
is a chronicling of the history of human disease over many centuries. Hand-cast in paper and then worked back into with digital images of different diseases and their causes, each plate acts as both a petri dish and a reminder of previous instances in history where communities experienced hardships, isolation and sickness. Presented as a series of plates in commune, Hartog-Gautier’s work is an account of the impingements COVID-19 has placed on our sense of community, social interactions and ability to gather together. It is also a reminder that while our current moment might feel isolating, as a species we have overcome similar health crises in the past and have been able to move on and rebuild. Around the table
