Abdul Karim: Altered photograph (1886-2021) | 2021

Audrey Fernandes-Satar

Altered Photographs, 2021
These altered photographs ‘appropriate’ historical portraits produced for Queen Victoria in the 19th century by artist Rudolph Swoboda.

The portraits interrogate representation of the ‘colonial’ subject by juxtaposing patterns inspired by votive objects and masks of tigers.

This work is part of the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial exhibition Curiosity and Rituals of the Everyday.
