Pascale Giorgi’s A Maronna t'accumpagna.. ma chi guida sei tu (The Virgin Mary is with you, but it's you doing the driving)
provides a playful commentary on a campaign by the Diocese of Napoli to curb dangerous driving. In Naples, a city infamous for its chaotic nature and dangerous driving, the Automobile Club Napoli and the church leveraged the sacred name of the Virgin Mary and paired it with images of ‘cool pope’ Francis to encourage young people to drive safely. During the campaign, young people were encouraged to enter a competition with suggestions of how to increase road safety, with prizes offered including: Xboxes, PS4s, drones, hoverboards and action cams. Giorgi’s work appropriates custom votive imagery popular in Italy and emblazons it on a car windscreen shade in a composition equal parts celebrity worship and Late Renaissance painting. A Maronna t'accumpagna.. ma chi guida sei tu (The Virgin Mary is with you, but it's you doing the driving)
