Petersen studied at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art in London. She formed part of the Thami Mnyele Residency Programme in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art’s AfricAsia Symposium in 2019; the Zeitz MOCAA’s Atelier Residency program in 2021 and will be a resident at both the 32 BIS Art Foundation in Tunis, Tunisia and the Irma Stern Museum in Cape Town, South Africa in 2022.
Solo exhibitions include: ‘Thania Petersen’ at No Mans Art Gallery, Amsterdam; ‘Unraveled’ a commissioned performance, Afrovibes, Compagnie Theatre in Amsterdam; ‘IQRA’ at WHATIFTHEWORLD in Cape Town, South Africa; and ‘Between Land and a Raised Foot’, National Arts Festival, Cape Town (2019); ‘Remnants’, Everard Read Gallery, Cape Town (2017); and ‘I AM ROYAL’, AVA Gallery, Cape Town (2015).
Recent group exhibitions include ‘Afriques fantastiques / Fantastic Africa’, Contemporary Istanbul; ‘Un.e Air.e de Famille’, Paul Eluard Art and History Museum, Paris, France (2021); the ‘Curitiba International Biennial of Contemporary Art’, Oscar Niemeyer Museum, Brazil; ‘Radical Love’, Ford Foundation, New York, USA; and ‘Present Passing’, Osage Foundation, Hong Kong (2019).
Petersen’s work is represented in various public and private collections, most notably – The Smithsonian Museum of African Art, Washington DC, USA; The IZIKO South African National Gallery and Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), Cape Town; Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), USA; The Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam; The Durban Art Gallery, South Africa; and The Yeoju City Collection, Gyeonggi, South Korea.
