Shana James

Shana James is a West Australian Artist who works in painting, printmaking and artists’ books. Graduating from a fine art degree at Curtin University in 1989, she has maintained a continued practice over the past 30 years; exhibiting widely in Perth and Melbourne including nine solo shows and numerous group shows and commissions.

“My images are symbolic and storytelling; recent work uses the story of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll as a critical lens to explore ideas concerning the self actualisation of the individual. Through this work I investigate the interplay between the individual –  their choices and actions and the society we are part of; creating a a poetic interpretation of events in every day life.”

She is represented by Stala Contemporary and has works in the Collections of Kerry Stokes, Artbank, The WA Water Corporation, The WA ministry for Culture and the Arts and Monash University. She is currently a Masters by Research Candidate at Edith Cowan University, in Visual Arts; where she is continuing her narrative art practice. Additionally, Shana teaches drawing, painting and printmaking at Fremantle Arts Centre.
