Peter Ward

Peter was born in rural Victoria, grew up in suburban Melbourne and attended Swinburne
Technical College where he graduated with a Diploma of Graphic Art. It was at Swinburne
that his interest in printmaking began. After the obligatory overseas sojourn he landed in
the Gold Coast hinterland where he set up a screen printing studio. He also worked part
time with Errol Barnes at the Lyrebird Pottery. It was at this time he won the Gold Coast
Art Prize. Five years in Sydney followed before he moved to Tuscany where he had a
studio in the countryside and a small exhibition space in Volterra from where he sold relief
prints, screen prints, watercolours, acrylic paintings and collages. The familiarity with
many different types of media proved useful on returning to Australia. Whilst he chose
relief printmaking as his primary medium he was able to push the technique beyond the
straight forward by incorporating multi-block colour, underpainting, hand colouring,
weaving, quilting and collage.
