Born in Sydney, Australia, Peter Burgess studied Architecture at NSWIT before
studying Art at Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education. He received his
Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, New York in 1981. Burgess has had
numerous solo shows and has exhibited extensively in group exhibitions across
Australia, North America and Europe, including: Documenta 8 (Kassel, 1987) and
The Decade Show (New Museum, NY, 1990), Australian Perspecta (AGNSW,1983),
Prints and Australia – Presettlement to the Present (Australian National Gallery,
1989) and Streetwise – contemporary print culture (ANG Contemporary, Australian
National Gallery, 2015).
He has been the recipient of numerous Grants, Fellowships, Awards and
Residencies.
Peter Burgess lived and worked (Adjunct, Art Department, New York University) in
New York for more than twenty years and relocated to Sydney in 2000. He was
Head of the Printmaking Department at a Sydney Art School from 2012-2021.
