Joanna Brown

Joanna studied Visual Arts and Art Teaching at Curtin University before completing her Masters of Art Therapy at ECU. She has had a long and varied career in the arts and currently works as a digital designer/illustrator.

Joanna’s subject matter is most often botanical. Specifically local botanical. It’s often about the walk to the highway, the neighbours plants, the microcosm of the square metre of garden at home.

Her process starts with detailed digital drawings of individual plant elements. She tries to faithfully reproduce what she can observe to produce a digitally realistic drawing.

“I am all about information gathering and slowing down and really seeing colour and texture, little hairs, spots and imperfections”.

From each detailed botanical study she then manipulates multiple drawings on screen, combining and arranging them in a process reminiscent of collage, almost as if she were a digital landscape architect. She identifies shapes, forms and colours trying to uncover patterns and relationships.
