Painting

Jo Darvall

Originally from Melbourne, Jo Darvall studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, receiving a BA in Fine Art in 1998. She established the Artists for Kids Culture Trust with fellow Roar Artists in the 1990s. Jo also worked with Master Printer Kim Westcott and had a studio at the Australian Print Workshop in Melbourne.

Since moving to Perth in 2009 Jo has continued to grow her art practice by distilling her ideas and uncovering new stories from the West. She works from her Pakenham Street Arts Space studio in Fremantle, and is an arts educator at Fremantle Arts Centre.

Jo mixes all her colours from basic primaries, creating her trademark palette of blues, rusty reds and warm tones. The artist’s deft use of soft light, warm colour and breathing space results in elegant, textural artworks that reward with repeated viewing.

Her work expands and shapes the Australian story – particularly that of the natural landscape – in a way that is both contemporary and enduring. Like the most reliable landmarks, it looks well placed to stand the test of time.

Jo Darvall is represented by Artforum Gallery Singapore, Linton and Kay Fine Art Gallery Perth, Studio Gallery Yallingup, PG Print Gallery Melbourne and Rochfort Gallery Sydney.
