Ceramicist

Janis Heston

Janis Heston is a highly skilled and experienced ceramicist making artistic and functional pieces with a focus on raku fired containers and reliquaries. Janis predominantly uses a combination of hand throwing and hand building techniques to form her pieces.

Once formed, the pieces are coated with many layers of Terra Sigillata which is a very fine particle liquid clay slip. Each individual layer is burnished to build up a lustrous surface, ultimately enhancing the effects of the firing process.

Each piece is fired at low temperature to maintain porosity and in its own individual container along with various combustible materials and minerals which act to impart different effects on to the clay surface. Some pieces are fired multiple times before the desired result is achieved.

After firing, the pieces are waxed and polished to further enhance the resultant colours and finishes.
